March 7, 2018 / Janice Rojas / Staff Spotlight

This month, we’re spotlighting Arkela Black-Wills! Arkela manages the President and CEO’s calendar as well as preparing agendas, room space, recording meeting minutes and assisting on projects. Prior to coming to Carolina Small Business, Arkela worked for Branch Banking & Trust (BB&T) for 11 years. Arkela earned a Bachelor of Science in electronics computer technology from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

CSBDF: What’s your alma mater?
Arkela: “the Home of the Aggies”, North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University.

CSBDF: Where is your hometown?
Arkela: Wake Forest, North Carolina

CSBDF: What is your personal philosophy?
Arkela: That life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass…it’s about learning how to dance in the rain.

CSBDF: What is your favorite thing to do?
Arkela: Relax and spend time with family and close friends.

CSBDF: What do you like most about working at Carolina Small Business Development Fund?
Arkela: Being a part of a company that helps people achieve their dreams and are willing to just give people a chance.  Coming from a traditional bank where you mostly do not see help given to people that may not have the best credit or the best circumstances, it warms my heart to be employed by a company that does.

CSBDF: If you could interview one person (dead or alive) who would it be?
Arkela: My Great Grandmother

CSBDF: How do you define success?
Arkela: Doing something that you enjoy and that you are passionate about that helps to make an impactful difference in not only your life but others.

CSBDF: What is the best book you have ever read?
Arkela: Aside from reading the Bible for my understanding and my strength, my favorite childhood story is The Never-Ending Story.

CSBDF: What is your favorite vacation spot?
Arkela: While I absolutely loved vacationing in DR, my favorite so far has to be our family trip to Niagara Falls.  My daughter absolutely loved the calmness of the water and the crashing of the waterfalls.  The look in her eyes and on her face was just as breathtaking to me as the splendor of Niagara.

CSBDF: What is your favorite meal/food?
Arkela: Ribeye

CSBDF: Who or what inspires you to do the work that you do?
Arkela: Being the change (or part of the change) that I wish to see in the world.
