Carolina Small Business Development Fund Research Report and Brief
ABSTRACT
North Carolina is fortunate to be home to large numbers of Veteran-Owned employer firms that have out-sized economic impact. Although existing data on Veteran needs is limited, current research suggests Veteran entrepreneurs face unique challenges related to access to capital. We suggest benchmarks for evaluating community developer success in this area using Carolina Small Businesses Development Fund’s lending data as an example.
WHY THIS MATTERS
Though not often thought of as a marginalized group, the data suggest that veteran small business owners share challenges similar to that of other under-served constituencies. However, limited scholarship exists on this matter and there is a strong need for more robust outcome assessments of veteran assistance programs.
